By March 17th, I will have removed all bar 20 items of modern clothes from my wardrobe. From then on, only handmade/vintage 1940's clothing is allowed.
The aim is to have a practical, functional, co-ordinating wardrobe of pretty garments. Hats, gloves, shoes included.
I have much to do and I will post updates later. I hope this blog can be a record of my journey :-)
Just doing a check to ensure comments are working :-)
ReplyDeleteGood for you Sarah! I am also in the initial stages of sewing (and knitting/crocheting) for my own wardrobe. It seems like there are more needs to fill than time to do it, but it is a fun endeavor nonetheless!
ReplyDeleteI know... Sleep gets in the way... :-)
DeleteHappy sewing to you!
Sarah
This is a great idea, and I have a question regarding the 1940's: Since the war affected fashion, will you be making your wardrobe for the war years, or post war (when the hemlines dropped after 1947)? The changes in fashion for those final years of the 40's is really amazing. A fashionable woman had to really scramble fast to drop the hemlines in her existing wardrobe, and remove those shoulder pads so she had a softer shoulder style. Even the fuller skirts were different. Which 'look' are you going to follow? Whichever you choose, it will be fun to see that happen here in your blog.
ReplyDeleteHi Jen,
DeleteI think i will try a few different styles. One of the advantages of trying this now, Is that i can be 1939 one day and 1945 the next. I guess I will see what suits me and what i find comfortable to wear. As i do more research (as i'm a novice at this fashion period) i'm sure i will find a niche.
Anyway i had better get back to sewing. I'm putting in slashed darts. :-)
Sarah
I wish you luck and i will be always visiting here to check out your new outfits. I'm super anxiooous. Loved the idea, Sarah. Kisses, honey ♥
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting!
DeleteI wish i had more time to sew and had the wardrobe right now!!
Have a good day and now i must get back to the sewing room :-)

I'm really happy to have found this blog! My daughter (aged 14) has informed me she wants to sell all of her modern clothes and dress only 1940's- but besides just dressing vintage she wants to "live vintage." She's already given up the internet so no struggles with that. I'm looking to make contacts with other vintage dressers so I can help her out with her quest.
ReplyDeleteHi there,
DeleteThere are quite a few blogs and bloggers that love the 40's style. I was amazed myself when i went looking for information. I'm very new to the idea (and to sewing) but feel free to keep in touch. I love hearing from people that share my passion with pretty clothes and a love of history. Sarah
Under pinnings too???
ReplyDeleteSome underpinnings... Obviously i need slips and things. The rest.... hmmm... will see... Not yet anyway :-)

Brilliant idea! Will definitely watch your progress :) I'm really into sewing things but my first 'vintage' dress was a disaster, so now I'm going for usable separates in a capsule style thingie! Any tips on finding appropriate scarves for hair etc?
